There isn't much information on the internet about HOL!DAY. Not anywhere really. The group, assuming they are a group, has three singles out - the latest of which is 'Call On My Brothers', an early 2000's rock jam that has lived in our Waxx Lyrical Mixtape for the past month or so now.
Something of a men's mental health anthem, the song plays after the abrupt realisation of romantic betrayal and just might be the best thing that Dave Grohl never recorded. It has the beautifully-hushed vocals over the verses - they're ultimately tough and brimming with bravado, but possess a certain fragility at times, indicating a feeling of hurt and more depth from the vocalist. It swings brilliantly with heaven-bound guitar licks and drums which adopt a fearless machine gun rattle laying down the solid foundation. Interestingly, it breaks down after about two minutes into a half-time waltz with huge, killer lead and eventual guitar crunching leading into another verse and an even slower, tripped out chorus. It's kinda genius how these differing elements actually work together is perfect harmony. But it's the simple yet sharp lyrics that do it for me personally: "Call on my brothers, my family, my friends / this top is spinning off axis again / when I topple over and over again / please place my brain back inside my head." Relatable much, dudes?!
Upon reaching out to HOL!DAY on Instagram we learned that they are a new emerging musical indie/alt/rock art project fronted by Billie Joe Armstrong doppleganger, Tyler Treves. He tells us that he has readied a whole album called Delusions of Grandeur, recorded with Eric Palmquist (Thrice, Bad Suns, Half Alive) at Palmquist Studios in LA and set for release at the end of '24. Singles are being released every seven weeks until then and 'Call On My Brothers' is the third. Previous singles 'Spellbound' (released in April) and 'Self Destruct' (June) occupy a similar yet different sonic space, reflecting that modern alternative rock production paired with classic rock elements and orchestrations. These two feature a sonic approach that The Beatles or Elliott Smith very well could've taken. In context, the three songs sitting together do indeed indicate that we're going to receive an exciting rock album with some very sharp teeth, come December.
Random unimportant fact - Treves lives in Oxnard, somewhere up the coast between Malibu and Santa Barbara. Upon hearing those familiar album titles, he revealed that he actually went to high school with one Anderson .Paak. There you go!
