Uncovering the Brighter Side Of Blue: A Closer Look at Babitha's Debut Album

WATCH

Appearing as if out of nowhere, Babitha (think ‘Tabitha’ with a ‘B’) is the alias of young musician, vocalist, and guitarist Imogen Grist, who grew up in rural NSW listening to the music of Neil Young, ABBA, and Fleetwood Mac. Unveiled in early 2023, her first album - Brighter Side Of Blue - is influenced by the classic ‘other woman’ archetype and garnered attention for its sophisticated blend of 70s pop rock, folk rock, and cosmic Americana, evoking "the essence of coastal breezes, desert shimmer, and urban alleys". Imagine a songwriting retreat featuring Chrissie Hynde and Marlon Williams alongside Big Thief and The Delines. This release was recognized as one of the standout Australian albums of 2023 by Impressed Recordings, Double J, and NME, who all included it in their respective Album Of The Year lists. Babitha's songwriting immediately captivates with its timeless essence, specific mood, and unique groove that feel oddly familiar, yet serve as melodic anchors bridging the gap between the ethereal ambience and dreamy upbeat elements of her music. Is it alternative country, paying homage to Gillian Welch? Is it classic rock, drawing from the same well as Chrissie Hynde? Is it indie-folk, reminiscent of a brighter Jen Choler? You be the judge.
