Honestly, we're shaking with excitement as we write this - it gives us enormous pleasure to announce this month's Record of The Month - Andy Bull's 2014 magnum opus Sea Of Approval.
Criminally, this fantastic album has never been pressed to vinyl, so we made it our mission to rectify this and have done so with the kind support and assistance of Universal Music Australia.
To consider pressing Andy Bull's glorious pop masterpiece to vinyl was a no-brainer really. For starters, it has never been on wax, so that made the decision simpler. But we felt, the physical presence was needed in our record collections to keep this one well and truly alive into the future.
The chameleonic talents of Andy Bull had already produced a debut album and his second Sea Of Approval threatened to top it. Little more than a one-man production, Andy set to dismantle his already-bulletproof reputation and rebuild it as not a phenomenal singer and writer, but also as a dangerously gifted pop music auteur.
He didn't skip a beat, upon its release, first single 'Keep On Running' was premiered by Richard Kingsmill on triple j and was warmly-embraced by all. The drastic, albeit incredible stylistic shift was seamless and was followed up with 'Baby I Am Nobody Now' and 'Talk Too Much', songs that stretched perception even further. The former appears on the record in its almost-seven-minute unedited version, the way the musician intends it to be heard.
Beautifully-wonky synth, sonic experimentation and that voice dictates the path of the album that saw the solivagant Andy Bull getting lost, finding his way and emerging victorious with a pop masterpiece.
Beyond its high art, the album garnered flawless reviews and stacked up the accolades. It received three ARIA nominations (including Best Pop Release, Breakthrough Artist and Best Engineer (Paul McKercher), a Hottest 100 placing (#61) for 'Talk Too Much', a remix courtesy of Todd Rundgren, a sold out headline tour and a spot on the 2015 Laneway Festival tour across the country.
It has it all, but above all, it's wonderful to finally hold Sea Of Approval and hear the needle touching the wax and finally the music the way it deserves to be heard.
