Previously a Waxx Lyrical Record of The Month, it arrives with exclusive listening notes and individually numbered OBI strip.
When Sydney indie music royalty Deep Sea Arcade released their hypnotic debut album in 2012, it’s an understatement to say they’d built serious hype. Indie music lovers worldwide were eagerly awaiting its arrival—and Outlands delivered. A blend of cinematic psychedelia, ethereal guitars, and electro-tinged rhythms, the album captured imaginations and soundtracked everything from countless late balmy nights to sunlit summer road trips. It’s an immersive listening experience—drop the needle, and you’ll simply need to hear the whole thing. The album is a testament to the experimental spirit of founders Nic McKenzie and the late Nick Weaver, who pushed the boundaries of sound from their earliest teenage four-track recordings. But in place of the sludgy drone of something like Tame Impala’s InnerSpeaker, Outlands offers kaleidoscopic grooves and a cleaner jangle—lighter, more upbeat, and unmistakably radio-friendly. It’s less “acid freak-out” and more like watching the world through rainbow-coloured sunglasses, slightly inebriated. Across twelve tracks, Outlands signposts significant influences in indie rock from the past 50 years. Shades of The Strokes and Phoenix shine through on ‘Granite City,’ echoes of The Kinks surface on ‘Don’t Be Sorry,’ and even a touch of Interpol emerges on ‘All The Kids.’ Yet these touchpoints are given a light psychedelic facelift, resulting in a sound that is both familiar and refreshingly original. Dreamy and danceable, with a knack for weaving otherworldly grooves and lyrical storytelling, Outlands remains a brilliant snapshot of Australian indie in the early 2010s. Whether you’re a Deep Sea Arcade novice or nostalgically revisiting the album, it continues to reward listeners with every spin.
